TDMs

Topic Dependency Models (TDMs) use a common graph foundation to address some of the challenges that relate to the design, delivery and analysis of assessment.

TDMs Interface

How Does it Work?

TDMs transfers exam or practice result into visualized diagram that show performance of different students on different topics as well as the relationship and coverage between each topic.

Effective Feedback

TDMs provide rich and timely feedback to students on their assessment.

Visual Analytics

TDMs adopts meaningful color and width to give direct analytic feedback.

Multiple Target Users

TDMs provide benefits to a range of stakeholders including students, instructors, and educational researchers.

Discipline Agnostic

TDMs can be used in any dicipline.

Topic Dependency Models

TDMs enable students, instructors and educational researchers to better utilise student assessment data

Students

students can use TDMs to compare their performance with class average to determine their weaknesses and strengths.

Insturctors
Instructors can use TDMs to investigate, and address on-going problem areas in a course such as poor performance on particular topics.

Educational Researchers
Educational researchers can use the tool to answer their own research questions related to assessment to provide valuable insight on best practices on design, delivery and analysis of assessment.

Comparison

Teaching-Facing Interface

The tool has an interface for teaching staff that allows them to upload and analyse their assessment data.

Upload data

The tool takes in two CSV files as input. One of the CSVs captures the question-topic relationships and the other CSV file captures the student-question-grade relationships.

Analyse Class-level gaps

Instructors can visualise the class-level TDMs to identify general gaps or misconceptions in the course

Analyse Individual-level gaps

Instructors can visualise the individual-level TDMs to identify each students' gaps or misconceptions in the course

Upload

Student-Facing Interface

The tool has an interface for students to receive feedback on their assessments

Multiple Assessment

Students use the tool to receive feedback on one or more assessments items.

Comparison with the Class Average

Students can compare their own performance with the class average

Additional Information

Status

An initial version of TDMS has been developed. A more advanced version that uses LTI for integeration into Learning Management Systems is under development.

Technologies Used

TDMs uses HTML, CSS and JavaScript in the front-end and Python in the back-end.
